Final Year Projects Expo 2011 A Great Success

The final year students from the Schools of Computing and Electronic Engineering participated in a hugely successful event on Tuesday 31st May, in the Helix.  The event, Expo 2011, gave these students the opportunity to showcase the work they had completed for their final year project (FYP) assignments and to demonstrate their achievements to invited corporate guests from the ICT sector.

It started at 8.00am with a breakfast and short speeches from DCU President Prof. Brian McCraith, guest speaker Liam Ryan, Managing Director of SAP Ireland and the two Heads of School, Prof. Mike Scott and Dr. Noel Murphy.  Over 200 guests from many of the top ICT companies arrived with great enthusiasm and eagerness to meet the students.   James Flynn and Brendan Murray of IBM Ireland announced Graham Rhodes, 4th Year student from the BSc. in Computer Applications as the winner of a high spec laptop for the best use of Opensource in his project.

Recent reports show a significant rise in job opportunities in the ICT sector and a shortfall of graduates to fill the vacancies. Ireland has created 5,000 jobs in the technology sector since 2010 and employers expect more opportunities for software engineers in the future.  Expo 2011 was an excellent opportunity for IT and Engineering professionals to meet the students and view the high standard and broad range of development work carried out during their time in DCU.  Feedback from the event has been tremendous, many students were offered employment or job interviews and the soon-to-be graduates leave DCU confident that their career prospects are extremely positive.
