Title: Hand Gesture Recognition for Mobile Devices

Supervisor: Dr. Alistair Sutherland

Abstract: Handshape recognition is a challenging task because hands are deformable objects. In this report we present some techniques for handshape recognition using Computer Vision. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used to reduce the dimensionality and extract features. We propose to apply PCA in more than one stage, creating a second stage PCA. In this second stage, we will interpolate data using splines. These data are either manifolds or eigenspaces. We present some preliminary results on that. In addition, we intend to apply hierarchical methods for classification, such as: coarse-to-fine search. Literature review, work plan and a schedule will be presented as well.
