School of Computing Wireless Network
- This service is available to all staff and students who have a wireless
network card installed in their laptop. Any "WI-FI" 802.11b/g/n compliant card
should work.
- First you need to install your wireless card according to the
manufacturers instructions.
- While most network cards will connect to the 'School of Computing'
wireless network automatically you may need to connect manually.
- Then you need to configure your web browser. For Internet
Explorer, follow these instructions.
- Step 1. Start Internet Explorer
- Step 2. Click tools
- Step 3. Click internet options
- Step 4. Go to the connections tab
- Step 5. Click lan settings
- Step 6. Type 'http://www.computing.dcu.ie/proxy.pac' into the Automatic
configuration script address box as shown below and click OK.You may need to
restart Internet Explorer.

Connecting manually
Most network cards will come with a connection client utility that can
be seen as an icon in the system tray (bottom right hand corner of your
screen). If you click on this icon it should display a list of available
wireless networks.
If there is no specific connection client utility then you can follow
the procedure below :
- Click Start
- Click Settings
- Click Network Connections
- Click on the icon for your wireless card
- Click the 'View Wireless Networks' button.
- A list of available networks should be displayed
- Select 'School of Computing' from the list and click 'Connect'

IP information from the network
How do I check my ip information?
To check if your IP information is correct follow the procedure below.
- Click start
- Click run
- Type command in the open box
- When the command prompt comes up type ipconfig
If the IP address setting begins with anything other than 136.206.218.X
(eg. 169.254.10.22 or 0.0.0.0) then we have identified the problem and you
should follow the procedure below.
- Right click on My Network Places.
- Go to Properties.
- Double click on Wireless Network Connection.
- Click on Properties.
- Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
- Click Obtain IP Address automatically.
- Click Obtain DNS server address automatically
- Click OK and Close
